Stewardship / Evangelization

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) - A program of teaching, faith sharing, and fellowship for those interested in joining the Catholic Church.  The program begins in early September and finishes a few weeks after the Easter Vigil.  Meetings are held in Cathedral Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays during that period.  Volunteer opportunities are available for Hospitality (greeting/refreshments) and Sponsors.  Volunteers can sign up for Hospitality for one or as many evenings as desired.  Sponsors are matched with participants as needed. Stewardship Committee - Meets monthly to discuss strategies and programs for reaching out to Catholics and how to bring out the Gospel message especially to those of the greater Harrisburg area.  Theresa Capricci, chairperson, Father Rozman, ext. 212.

Religious Education

Adult Religious Education Committee - Preparing and helping with programs such as the Lenten Rice Bowl Series or other faith enrichment courses. Father Rozman, ext. 212.

Baptism Preparation – Preparing for the sacrament of Baptism. Includes an in-the-home interview with parents and godparents (when possible).  Deborah Wehr, coordinator, Lubiann Reichert, staff, ext. 223.

Bible Study Groups - Uses the Little Rock Scripture Study Program, a parish based program that leads people to a greater understanding of the Bible, and awareness of God’s living presence in Sacred Scripture, and an appreciation of how the Bible can be applied to daily life.  Through personal study, small group discussion, lecture and prayer, the program provides a solid balance of scholarship, reflection, and application.  Groups typically meet on a weekly basis during the study for 6—8 weeks.   Adam and Starla Robinson, coordinators.

Bishop McDevitt High School - Interest in supporting the high school through service or material contributions. John Bircher, Cathedral Parish member of the Board of Directors.  Father Rozman, ext. 212.

Cathedral Consolidated School - Interest in supporting the grade school through service or material contributions. Mariann and Jack Hillenbrand, Cathedral Parish members of the Board of Directors. Suzanne Gausman, Principal - 234-3797.

Cathedral School Development Committee - Coordinates fund-raising projects and promotes goodwill in support of Cathedral School.  Pat Carnathan, coordinator.  Father Rozman, staff, ext. 212.

Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) - Opportunities to share the faith with our children who attend public school (although all children are invited to attend) as catechists, substitutes, aids and helpers. Sundays 10:45 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Becky Fair, staff, ext. 211.

Sacramental and Special Programs for Children - Coordinates Sacramental programs for First Penance, First Eucharist and Confirmation for children in the Cathedral School and the School of Religion. Offering special programs for children of the parish. Becky Fair, staff, ext. 211.

Youth Group - Opportunity to share the faith with our teenagers.  Sundays 10:45 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Kevin Peters, coordinator.

Pastoral Ministry

Archives - Helping to display and maintain parish historical records, photos and memorabilia. Angela Smith-Aumen, coordinator, Lubiann Reichert, staff, ext. 223.

Bereavement - Assists family of a deceased parishioner in any way, especially by attending the Funeral Mass.  Includes cake baker, family meal preparation and companionship.

Blood Bank - Helping with the administration of the parish Blood Bank through mailings and other types of clerical work; giving blood on a regular basis.   Ilene Bennett, coordinator, Lubiann Reichert, staff, ext. 223.

Communion to the Homebound - Coordinated through the pastor as requested.  Father Rozman - ext. 212

Knights of Columbus - Service-oriented group for men of the parish; meetings are held on a regular basis.  Grand Knight: Jon Castelli, Father Rozman, ext. 212.

Marriage Preparation - Couple to couple program of mentoring, an integral part of the marriage preparation program in the Diocese of Harrisburg.  Please note: couples from the parish contemplating marriage should call the pastor one year before a tentative date. Father Rozman, ext. 212

Ministry to Persons who are Deaf - Social and spiritual support group and an opportunity to celebrate the Eucharist weekly through sign. Joan Langendijk and Ginny & Sandy Duncan, coordinators, Margaret Peters, staff ext. 222.

Parish Advocate -  A parish advocate is a person who assists the pastor in working for and with parishioners with disabilities. The advocate strives to assist parishioners with disabilities to become full participants in the life of the Church – spiritually, physically and socially.  Jim Donahue 599-0264 Father Rozman,  232-2169, staff,  ext. 212.

Pastoral Council - Recommends parish policy to the pastor, facilitates communication with all areas of mission within the parish.  Council members are elected by parishioners mid-summer for a three-year term, and meets monthly at the rectory.  Father Rozman, 232-2169 ext. 212; Lubiann Reichert, staff, ext. 223.

Prayer Chain - A group of people committed to praying for special prayer requests that are called in---always welcoming anyone who would like to share in this ministry. Lubiann Reichert, staff, ext. 223.

Respect-Life Committee - Meeting quarterly to discuss ways and means of helping people to know the life issues of our time. Council of Catholic Women, Ann Notarfrancesco, coordinator.

Rosary Leaders - Lead the congregation in the Rosary before Masses in May and October.  Father Rozman, ext. 212.

Vocation Awareness Committee - Parishioner efforts to encourage religious vocations within the parish through prayer, encouragement and education. Knights of Columbus, coordinator.

Welcoming Newcomers -Coordinates social events to welcome new parishioners Pastoral Staff and Stewardship Committee.

Young Married Families Ministry - Coordinates special events and support for married couples with young children.  Father Rozman, Ext. 212.

Liturgy

Altar Servers - For young people grades 5 through 12 and for adults. Serving at the altar on weekends and/or holydays. John Stuckert, coordinator, Margaret Peters, staff, ext. 222.

Cantors - Leading the congregation in song at weekend liturgies. Must be experienced singer. Audition required. Irene Woodard, coordinator. Nicholas Basehore, staff, ext. 224.

Cathedral Choir (Adult Choir) - Singing at one liturgy a weekend. Experienced singer. Audition required. Rehearsals are Wednesdays, September through June, and Sunday mornings. Nicholas Basehore, staff, ext. 224.

Cry Room - A nursery is available during the 9:30 Mass for parents who need to leave Mass with their young children.  Becky Fair, staff ext. 211.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion - Help to distribute the Body and Blood of Christ at the Celebration of the Eucharist on weekends and/or weekdays.  Must be high school age or older.  Call for further details. Margaret Peters, staff, ext. 222.

Greeters - Helping with hospitality at weekend liturgies by welcoming participants, passing out the music bulletin, taking care of special needs, and straightening up the church after services. Steve Brouse, coordinator, Margaret Peters, staff ext. 222.

Hospital Visitation - Weekly visitation of parishioners in local hospitals, enhancing the ministry of the hospital chaplain. Please note: in order to receive a visit you, a friend or a relative must call the parish office with the appropriate information, as the hospitals no longer do this for you.. Instrumentalists and Organists - Willing to use your talent at special liturgies throughout the liturgical year. Nicholas Basehore, staff, ext. 224.

Lectors - Proclaiming the Word of God at the Celebration of the Eucharist on weekends and/or weekdays. Must be high school age and older. Michael Billo - 234-2431, coordinator, Margaret Peters, staff ext. 222.

Liturgical Sacristans - Helping to prepare for the weekend liturgies in between Masses and special events at the Cathedral Church. Don Weedon, coordinator, Margaret Peters, staff ext. 222.

Ushers - Helping with hospitality at weekend liturgies by welcoming participants, taking care of special needs, passing out the weekly bulletin, taking up the collection, and straightening up the church after services. Steve Brouse, coordinator, Margaret Peters, staff ext. 222.

Social Justice

Adopt-A-Family - Assists with goody baskets to the less fortunate between the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. Gianna Veno, coordinator, Lubiann Reichert, staff ext. 223.

Saturday Morning Breakfast Program - Breakfast is served every Saturday morning to those in need.  Volunteers report to Cathedral Hall from 6 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.  Duties include cooking, cleaning and serving.  Susie Brehm, coordinator.

Sunday Evening Dinner Program - Dinner is served every Sunday evening to those in need.  Volunteers report to Cathedral Hall from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sundays. Duties include cooking, cleaning and serving. Barry & Jacquie Ryan, coordinators.  

Shining Light Thrift Shop – Serves economically disadvantaged individuals by providing clothing, household goods, and domestics through free and discount programs.  Volunteer opportunities available in the shop Wednesday through Saturday.  Other volunteer opportunities available such as working with businesses to gain needed items; eBay sales, etc.; working with schools/businesses to do drives for needed items; fundraising; handyman services; etc.  Contact Connie Hanna at 652-8283. 

Thanksgiving Food Drive - Coordinates the food gift cards distributed to the poor of the City of Harrisburg from a collection taken on or around Thanksgiving Day.

Winter Overnight Outreach - Assists a program coordinated by the Christian Churches United to offer shelter to the homeless during the cold winter months.  Located at Susquehanna Harbor / Safe Haven, 1805 North 12th Street, Harrisburg, from December through March.  Father Rozman, staff ext. 212.

Financial Administration

Buildings and Grounds Committee - Lending expertise to the physical needs of the parish plant. John Bircher, staff

Finance Committee - Advises the pastor on the temporalities of the parish. Helps to raise awareness and money for the needs of the parish and the community at large through such programs as the Lenten Appeal and the tithing program.  Doug Colson, chairperson.  Father Rozman, staff, ext. 212.

Money Counters - Helping to count the collection on Sunday morning and Monday morning. Bill Rarick, coordinator, Lubiann Reichert, staff, ext. 223.

Other Supportive Ministries

Bulletin - The primary means of communicating with the parish. Please note: submissions (including inserts) should be made to the office before 10:00 a.m. on the Tuesday before the weekend to be published, earlier for holiday weekends. Margaret Peters, staff, ext. 222.

Calendar - All parish and non-parish events must be cleared and scheduled. Dates, times and building use must be submitted on the proper forms. Lubiann Reichert, staff, ext. 223.

Cathedral Gift Shop - Located in the lower level of the Cathedral, the Cathedral Gift Shop sells books, cards, rosaries, artwork, and many other Catholic related items.  Hours are Monday - Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.   Volunteers are always welcome.  Terry Wert, manager.  Lubiann Reichert, staff, ext. 223.

Cleaning and Maintenance - Helping to take care of the physical plant by sharing gifts of labor and skills. John Bircher, staff.

Council of Catholic Women (CCW) - Empower and educate all Catholic women in spirituality, leadership and service. Mary Ann Baranowski, president.

Garden Club - Taking responsibility for one of the flower/shrub beds around the Cathedral Church. Michael Billo, coordinator, John Bircher, staff.

Liturgical Linens / Vestments - Taking care of the vestments, cleaning the sacristy and altar area in the Cathedral Church. Jean Aycock, coordinator, Margaret Peters, staff, ext. 222.

Office Volunteers – Helping with clerical work in the office on an “as needed” and “as available” basis from Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m.– 1:00 p.m. and  1:30 p.m.- 4:00 p.m.  Office is closed from 1:00 - 1:30 p.m. for lunch.  Friday hours are 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  Lubiann Reichert, staff, ext. 223.

Public Relations - Keeping the parish and the community at large informed through various media, such as flyers, posters, etc. Margaret Peters, staff, ext. 222.
